How is the test set up?

The Duolingo English Test is computer-adaptive, which means that the test difficulty of certain questions changes depending on how you are performing.

You can expect to receive a variety of question types that include speaking, writing, reading, and listening challenges. You will also be asked to answer open-ended questions which require a spoken or written response.

Finally, after the test is completed, you will have the chance to showcase your speaking and writing skills to the institutions you’re applying to. You will receive one speaking prompt and one writing prompt. Please note that any institution that you share your scores with will have access to these responses.

To see sample questions, please check our official test readiness guide and take our practice test.
