Beginning July 1st, 2024, the Duolingo English Test will report individual subscores (speaking, writing, reading, and listening) along with integrated subscores (literacy, comprehension, conversation, and production).
Research in applied linguistics indicates that integrated subscores best represent how language is used in practice. Effective and natural language use often requires people to simultaneously employ multiple skills, including in academic settings. Combining individial subscores with integrated subscores provides institutions and admissions offices with a detailed view of a test taker's English language proficiency.
The individual subscores are calculated based on performance on the test. The average of the individual subscores, rounded to the nearest 5, will equal the overall score.
Each of the integrated subscores is an average of the two individual subscores that comprise it. For example, literacy is the ability to read and write. The literacy subscore is an average of the reading and writing subscores.
Integrated subscores from before July 1st, 2024 are not directly comparable to integrated subscores after the update. Converting old integrated subscores to new ones is not possible.
