Using your phone to record your computer

You will need to use your smartphone camera to record your keyboard and computer screen during the test.

To set this up:

1. Open the DET desktop app and sign in.
2. Proceed until instructed to set up your phone.
3. Scan the QR code. Use your phone's camera to do this, not another app. If scanning the QR code does not work, open a mobile browser and enter the URL above the QR code.
4. Make sure your phone is fully charged.
5. Turn on Do Not Disturb and make sure none of your contacts are set to bypass Do Not Disturb. You may also turn on airplane/flight mode, as long as your phone is connected to Wi-Fi.
6. Allow the desktop app to have access to your phone's camera.
7. Lean your phone against any heavy object to the left or right of your computer.
8. Position your phone far enough away to see your entire screen and keyboard.

What mobile browsers can I use?

We recommend using Chrome or Safari.

How can I make sure my phone is correctly positioned?

During setup, your phone's video feed will display on the computer screen. Move the phone around until the screen and keyboard are visible and entirely within the frame. You may need to position the phone to the side and slightly behind you.

What happens if the phone camera video is interrupted during the test?

The phone camera must record the computer screen and keyboard continuously throughout the entire test. If the video is interrupted, obscured, or interfered with, the test will be canceled or invalidated and you will need to take it again from the beginning.

Once set up to record, the phone will not enter sleep mode during the test.

What happens if I receive a notification during the test?

Notifications could lead to your session being invalidated.

How can I keep my phone from falling?

Placing the phone horizontally will be most stable.

A rubber case, instead of a hard plastic case or no case at all, will help prevent your phone from sliding and falling. You may also place something heavy in front of your phone, as long as it is not a prohibited item and it does not block the view of your phone's camera.

What happens if my phone does fall over during the test?

Since the test questions are timed, we recommend you quit the test and retake it from the beginning if your phone falls over.

Can the phone camera be used in place of the computer camera?

No. The computer camera and phone camera are both required to take the test.

What if my phone isn't fully charged?

You can plug your phone into a charger during setup and leave it charging throughout the test. Even if your phone is fully charged, connecting it to a charger can help ensure the battery doesn't die.

Do I need to save the test recording to my phone or upload it when the test ends?

No. The recording from your phone camera will automatically upload along with the recording from your computer's camera.

What if I don't have a phone with a camera?

A smartphone with a camera is a requirement to take the test. If you don't have one, you can borrow one. You can also use a tablet if needed.
