Test length
You will need about 1 hour of uninterrupted free time to take the Duolingo English Test.
Adaptive Testing
The Duolingo English Test is a computer-adaptive test, which means it has a few differences from other tests you may have taken.
Varying difficulty
The difficulty of some questions changes dynamically throughout the test. Therefore, some questions may seem easier or harder than others—that is normal!
Adaptive Length
The number of test questions varies. The test will administer more or fewer questions according to the grading engine’s confidence in your score.
Unique Experience
The test questions draw from an extremely large pool. It is highly unlikely that you will encounter the same question twice, no matter how many times you take the exam.
How the Test Is Set Up
1. Introduction and onboarding
- Ensure your computer’s camera, speakers, and microphone are functioning properly.
- Submit your government-issued photo ID.
- Set up your phone camera to record your computer.
- Review the test rules and requirements.
2. Adaptive Test
- Measures your English skills through a series of different question types.
- The difficulty of some questions changes based on your performance.
3. Writing and Speaking
- Write and speak responses to various prompts.
- The Writing Sample and Speaking Sample will be shared with institutions that receive your results.
