What are the consequences for violating the rules of the Duolingo English Test?

If you break any of the rules of the Duolingo English Test, Duolingo may do one or more of the following without providing a refund:

  • not certify your test results
  • invalidate any previously certified results
  • temporarily suspend your account
  • permanently block your account

There are three categories of broken rules:

1. Rule Violations

There is evidence your test environment may not have been secure. You may retake the test if you still have attempts remaining on your credit. You are not eligible to appeal your result.

2. Possible Misconduct

There is strong evidence you may have received assistance on the test from a person or an external resource. Your test credit will expire, but you may appeal your result.

3. Evident Misconduct

You received assistance on the test from a person or an external resource. You are permanently blocked from taking the test again on any account, but you may appeal your result.

One-Year Suspension

If you display a pattern of Rule Violations or Possible Misconduct on multiple tests in 365 days, your account may be suspended for one year from the date of the earliest broken rule. You will be unable to purchase or take the test on any account while your account is suspended.

Your previously certified test results will remain valid and accessible on your account. If you have already shared those results with institutions, those institutions will retain access. However, while your account is suspended, you will not be able to share your certified results with any new institutions.
